A still life is, by definition, without movement. It is interesting to see in the traditional still life paintings the inclusion of wildlife such as butterfly, bees and even cats to introduce the notion of immanent movement, suggesting potential energy which can never be realised.

Enzo Roff
Working in ultra-high definition video, he produces compositions of landscape and still-life. Conveying stillness and subtle movement through closely observed composition.

He is known for his moving still life video works in ultra-high resolution, which combine careful observation and framing with opulent compositions to produce a subtle yet dramatic trompe l’oeil effect. This effect recurs through his body of work as a kind of signature.

Roff’s inspiration comes from many sources, including Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Hopper and Vilhelm Hammershøi as well as numerous contemporary photographers and film makers. His work has been exhibited on screens, as installation video and as video projection. From June 2019 to March 2020 work by Roff will be on display alongside that of Gordon Cheung and others in a group exhibition of floral art at The Atkinson Museum in Southport, UK. Cross Pollination will combine works from The Atkinson’s collection with works loaned from the Arts Council’s collection.
